Awaken to Fresh Tropical Delights at Our B&B in Key West

A particular pleasure at the Tropical Inn is breakfast in our lush tropical garden. Or you may prefer to take a tray to your room, private porch or patio … or choose the Inn’s upstairs veranda overlooking Duval Street, for a little people watching as the town awakens!

Here in the Keys, B&Bs do things a bit differently than our more traditional counterparts in other parts of the country.  Breakfast is one example. At the Tropical Inn, we offer healthy, light but ample fare best described as an “expanded Continental” breakfast, prepared in accordance with governing local health codes. Licensing parameters prevent bed and breakfasts in Florida not having commercial kitchen facilities from cooking onsite, so the elaborate gourmet breakfast one might have experienced in, say, New England or Napa Valley, would be the exception here.

In an effort to compete with bed and breakfasts, American chain hotels have, in recent years, corrupted the term, “Continental breakfast” to include waffle stations, “omelets” from reconstituted egg powder, and the like.  We are more purist in our approach, offering only natural, organic-when-available, whole foods (free-range, hormone and antibiotic-free eggs; locally-sourced produce from South Florida Redlands farms, etc.) and honoring the term for its true heritage — Continental (mainland, exluding its islands) Europe.  Here is how Wiki describes it:  “A typical Continental breakfast consists of coffee and milk (often mixed as Cappucino or latte) or hot chocolate with a variety of sweet cakes such as brioche and pastries such as croissant, often with a sweet jam, cream, or chocolate filling. It is often served with juice. The continental breakfast may also include sliced cold meats, such as salami or ham, and yogurt or cereal. Some countries of Europe, such as The Netherlands and those in Scandinavia, add a bit of fruit and cheese to the bread menu, occasionally even a boiled egg.”   At the Tropical Inn, we serve all of the described, hence our term, “expanded Continental”.  To further enhance the variety, a different hot bread or pastry — and occasionally a more elaborate surprise treat from one of our island’s finest kitchens — is offered each morning.   We trust that you will appreciate the delicious and nutritious offerings we bring to you each morning, creatively planned and imaginatively presented.

We visit the marketplace several times a week to assure that you are always offered only the best quality and freshest, most wholesome selections, hand chosen from our island’s finest purveyors.  We hope you will enjoy sharing our tropical version of the Continental breakfast, served buffet-style on the back porch of the Main House each morning, beginning at the civilized hour of 8:30. In keeping with the way we do most things around here, it’s a casual affair.  Just come and help yourself when you’re ready.
